Lisa Swerling's Glass Cathedrals

Lisa Swerling's Glass Cathedrals are a series of art boxes containing brilliant tiny worlds, each making their own small statement on our complicated lives. Glass Cathedrals are glass-fronted boxes housing miniature scenes. There's something about the scale of these universes that makes their pursuits by turns heroic, tragic, humorous, wistful.

The ideas behind the Glass Cathedrals are based on thoughts Lisa has been having since she was a child. "Do I have to tidy my room? I'm going to die one day. I don't want to jump in the pool. Yay, glitter!etc. A lot of people have these moments of inspiration about what it is to be a funny little human traveling around a big planet. What to do with these thoughts? I started putting mine in boxes…"

The Glass Cathedral concept is taken from an episode in the Peter Carey book Oscar and Lucinda - a life-size glass church, made by missionaries in the Australian outback, is seen floating down a river. A trapped dragonfly collides against the walls trying to escape, blind to the concept of glass. There is a parallel collision between the seriousness with which we take our lives, and the limitations of our understanding. These little worlds make you stop, think, smile, laugh and celebrate the human condition.

I came across Lisa Swerling's Glass Cathedrals through the recommendation of a friend. I was struck by how incredibly moved I was by the beautifully constructed tiny cathedrals. Some of my personal favourites include:

Liberty London

One of a Kind Products by Britain's Best Loved Icons

Feeling patriotic? The National Treasures Collection at Liberty London gives you a wonderful opportunity to collect or gift your loved ones with a truly exclusive piece from some of our most beloved National Treasures, while supporting their favourite charity.

Some of my personal favourites include:

TRACEY EMIN ENGRAVED LAVENDER SOAP, NATIONAL TREASURES £10
"I could have Really Loved You"
Leading British Artist, Tracey Emin is notorious for her emotive and strongly opinionated work. She has created this beautiful lavender scented, engraved bar of soap that comes in an equally interesting wrapping, scrawled with a haunting poem. Tracey explains the story behind the poem as being: "Because I am against people stabbing each other. Full Stop." There are 3,500 limited edition bars of soap available to buy in store and online with proceeds going to Art Against Knives.

HELENA BONHAM CARTER AND ANNINA VOGEL ANGEL TINTYPE NECKLACE, NATIONAL TREASURES £350
Liberty captured some of actress Helena Bonham Carter's vivid and fanciful imagination by teaming her with talented jewellery designer Annina Vogel to create a limited edition collection of necklaces made from original 19th Century Tintypes. Each pendant is adorned with scribbles, beads and embellishment to create surreal and memorable jewellery pieces.
"I have always loved old photographs. I find them mesmerising: each person carries their own story. They seem so immediate and so literally tangible, and yet they have long vanished into the past. It's like holding a mini time machine. A friend and I started doodling on them. I started with the idea of wings to make them into guardian angels but then, as ever, tangents were taken."
